The 2 Bags and a Pack Travel Series

Authored by Ken Anderberg, international journalist and vagabond

Visions of Vodice

Blessed with a spectacularly beautiful coastline along the Adriatic Sea, Croatia offers visitors Roman ruins, old stone cities within modern ones, vineyards and fields of olive trees, and a friendly and honest people. In the fall of 2011, the author had the opportunity to live in Croatia for nearly three months as part of his “2 Bags and a Pack” travels (2bagsandapack.wordpress.com). The trip started in Asheville, N.C., went through Cincinnati and Paris, and ended (the flying part anyway) in Zagreb, the country's capital city. From there, Mr. Anderberg took a bus to Zadar on the Adriatic Sea coast. Two weeks later, he traveled by bus south to Vodice, where he rented an apartment through November. During his stay in Croatia, he was able to visit a number of towns and cities, and interrelate with a wide variety of Croats.

What you will find on the pages of this photo essay is not a tourist guide to Croatia, although Mr. Anderberg has chronicled several interesting tourist areas. His approach is to discuss topics of interest to people who might visit the country for longer periods of time than a few days or a week. Herein, you will find useful information for navigating life as an expat in Croatia, such as how to get around, or how to handle the language disconnect. The author has included many of the photographs he took in this beautiful country, so that readers can get a better sense of what life looks like in “real” Croatia.

  • Costa Rica: An Expat's Tale

During the author's 14 months in Costa Rica, he kept a running blog account of his experiences (2bagsandapack.wordpress.com). These accounts were not about being a tourist in Costa Rica; in fact, the author hardly visited any typical tourist destinations in the country, although he did visit the capital and several towns and villages. His purpose in writing about his experiences was to provide useful information to anyone retiring or moving there, insights that might help others more easily navigate Costa Rican culture and day-to-day activities. This photo essay book is an effort to bring together what Mr. Anderberg learned in Costa Rica that might help others considering a move there. This is not a travel guide; far too many others have already written such guides. This book provides useful, on-the-ground advice and ideas on how to negotiate this Central American country as a resident, not a two-week tourist. In addition, the author includes many of the photographs he took wile in Costa Rica, providing a unique view into daily living.
